About this Event
Dear Community Partner:
Late in the 60s, when the country was divided, John Carlos made a political stand that made headlines and sent shock waves worldwide. As a new Olympic medalist of 1968, he quickly became the world’s fastest humanitarian. His protest at the ceremonial podium became a historical symbol of the fight for human rights, and he has been awarded several doctorates and a statue in the African American Museum as a tribute to his legacy. Mr. Carlos has made it his mission to make a positive impact on humanity by giving back to the community with the assistance of the John Carlos Humanity Team through similar events. In a time when the world continues to be divided and plagued with gun violence, lack of affordable healthcare, education, and wealth disparities, his grandson, Marsalis Carlos, and other local community partners have connected to continue his legacy to strengthen the community bond by hosting the John Carlos Humanity Week in Hampton Roads. The Humanities Team has partnered with Hampton University’s Student Counseling Center to bring this year's run/community events. We are calling all alumni, community leaders, and change-makers to come together and support the events below:
The week will consist of the following:
- September 21, 2023: One Love Panel
- September 22, 2023: John Carlos Humanity Award Ceremony
- September 23, 2023: John Carlos Run For Humanity and Walk for Suicide Prevention/Post-Partum Depression
To honor Dr. John Carlos in his effort to make a positive impact, we need your support to bring the community together. Leading up to the run, we will accept nominations for local unsung heroes to be recognized for their service in their community. Along with unsung heroes, a rising senior athlete and current Hampton University student in the humanity field will also be awarded a scholarship. This week is not only a chance to recognize local heroes but also to inspire young athletes to further their educational and athletic goals. Local businesses and talents from the community will also be highlighted to display their contribution(s). The generous participation of guests and sponsors aids in continuing the John Carlos legacy by building the scholarship fund for future generations.
The John Carlos Humanity Week will take place at Hampton University. This event will bring local activists, athletes, and community partners together, as well as provide individuals with an opportunity to meet Dr. John Carlos. We would greatly appreciate the support and the opportunity to partner with you to help make the John Carlos Humanity Week successful with a donation. John Carlos Humanity Week promotes positivity in the community while advocating for mental health.
