Author Trinity Bursey and the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra are bringing their powerful and joyful fusion of music and storytelling to Knightdale, NC. In this one-of-a-kind 40-minute program, Trinity brings her beloved children’s book, The Day the Instruments Split, to life through a live reading accompanied by a full 17-piece jazz big band under the direction of Gregg Gelb featuring Gelb’s original compositions.This free JazzTales performance is part of a larger community based project that will result in a new book and new jazz compositions inspired by and dedicated to the Knightdale community. After we share the book and original composition with the community through this performance, we will facilitate a post-concert community discussion about the themes in JazzTales - focusing on the importance of working together as a community and fostering deeper community connections.
From this discussion, author Trinity Bursey will develop a new story (JazzTales Continued), and Dr. Gregg Gelb will compose new music to accompany the story. Once the story and music are complete, they will return to Knightdale in Spring 2026 to premiere the new work and continue the conversation with the community.
