A gifted jazz vocalist with an inventive vocalese-influenced style that helped her win both the Sarah Vaughan 2013 International Jazz Competition and the 2015 Thelonious Monk International Vocal-Jazz Competition, Jazzmeia Horn “is among the most exciting young vocalists in jazz, with a proud traditionalism that keeps her tightly linked to the sound of classic figures like Nancy Wilson and Betty Carter, but a vivacity of spirit and conviction that places her firmly in the present” (The New York Times). Named by her jazz-loving grandmother, Horn was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1991 and grew up in a close church-going family singing gospel music. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, which Roy Hargrove, Norah Jones, and Erykah Badu also attended, and in 2009, enrolled at The School of Jazz at The New School in New York City. After her Sarah Vaughan and Thelonious Monk competition wins, Horn was signed by Concord Records with whom she released her 2017 debut album, A Social Call, which was nominated for a Grammy Award. Her message about the global need for love and social change in the world was reflected in her 2019 release, Love and Liberation, which also received a Grammy nomination and won her the 51st NAACP Image Award for Best Jazz Album. Her latest release, Dear Love (2021), released on her own record label, Empress Legacy Records, also earned a Grammy nomination and features her 15-piece Noble Force ensemble, which she put together for the project. The album serves as a platform for Horn to showcase her perception of the world, and she notes, “All of our actions now will determine our future, and all of our actions in the past have determined our present. We know that. Based on what we do now, that's how we create a better future for our children and for future generations. It’s important because not a lot of people think about that. We've got global warming and all these other problems because people want to do what they want to do without thinking about the repercussions.” While Horn continues to tour nationally and internationally, she also teaches students and conducts outreach programs across the globe through The Jazz Horn International Vocal Initiative. Accompanying Ms. Horn tonight will be Victor Gould, piano; Aiden McCarthy, bass; & Greg Artry, drums.
