Miguel Rodríguez is an outstanding jazz pianist born in Madrid and based in the Netherlands, where he moved as a student to continue his musical education. After earning a Master’s degree in Jazz Piano from the Conservatory of Amsterdam and spending time in New York, where he studied with Aaron Goldberg, Dave Kikoski, Kenny Werner, and Fred Hersch, his career has continued to flourish. He has performed with major international jazz artists such as Branford Marsalis, Terell Stafford, Willie Jones III, Donald Harrison, and Eddie Henderson. In the Netherlands, he is a member of some of the most active groups on the scene, including the quartets of Benjamin Herman and Ben van den Dungen.
He has appeared on more than twenty albums as a sideman and has released three as a leader. In the field of education, since 2021 he has been a member of the Jazz Piano faculty at Codarts, the Rotterdam University of the Arts.
For many years, Steve Zwanink has been one of the most sought-after bassists in the Netherlands. Highly praised by Ruud Jacobs, he has performed with artists including Harold Mabern, Joe Farnsworth, John Marshall, Peter Bernstein, Mike LeDonne, Eric Ineke, Peter Beets, Roy Hargrove, and Jesse van Ruller, as well as with ensembles such as The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and the Metropole Orkest.
Steve serves as a principal subject teacher for double bass and an instructor for the Double Bass Lab at ArtEZ.
Drummer Joost van Schaik (1974) has been a prominent figure in the European jazz scene for some thirty years. He also frequently accompanies American jazz greats—such as Peter Bernstein and Scott Hamilton—during their European tours.
From a young age, Van Schaik studied under top Dutch drummers like John Engels and Han Bennink. At eighteen, he enrolled at the Hilversum Conservatory, from which he graduated *cum laude*. As a gifted young drummer, he won numerous awards and spent three months in New York, honing his craft under the guidance of masters including Kenny Washington, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, and Gregory Hutchinson.
In 2008, he received the Laren Jazz Award. The jury praised his phenomenal technique, noting: "He has made an impressive start to his career, and given his talents, he is set to reach even greater heights." He has indeed reached those heights, performing extensively in jazz clubs and at festivals alongside artists such as Curtis Fuller, James Moody, Toots Thielemans, Lew Tabackin, Toon Roos, Benjamin Herman, and Jesse van Rulle. He can be heard on more than 60 albums, where his craftsmanship, sense of adventure, and humor shine through in his playing. Since 2023, he has frequently showcased these qualities in concerts with the Kurt Rosenwinkel Trio.
Stylistically, Joost’s range spans from old-school swing to contemporary straight-ahead jazz. He feels an intrinsic drive to pass on the rich tradition of jazz drumming—and to clarify its nuances—to future generations. His goal is to teach students what it truly means for a drummer to function effectively within a jazz context, as well as in other genres such as pop, rock, and Latin music. Regarding his teaching, Joost says: “I have studied under many of the world’s greatest musicians myself, and I pass on what I have found to be important and effective. This encompasses various aspects, such as playing in time across all styles, maintaining a steady tempo, groove, improvisation, using brushes, big band playing, developing a sound, reading music(!), and understanding one’s functional role.”
