Jazz Night at The Fallout Shelter returns with two astounding jazz projects featuring some of the top jazz musicians in all of New England. On this night we'll be featuring TWO bands each bringing vastly different styles of traditional jazz music.
THE SHANE ALLESSIO QUARTET -
Shane Allessio plays hard hitting, heavy swinging, modern original jazz. Drawing from Mingus, George Russell, Stan Kenton, etc, boundaries are pushed while a respect for swing and the jazz tradition is upheld. Screaming crashing dissonances, virtuosic bowed bass solos and foot stomping grooves are to be expected at every show.
Coming off of a bold and unique new nonet album release, Tripp City, Shane seeks to challenge the listener to explore a wide range of emotions, characters and personal stories. Featuring staples of the scene such as Sarah Hanahan, Ruben Fox, Jason Marshall, Noah Halpern, Alphonso Horne, Mariel Bildsten, Marius Van Den Brink and Gary Kerkezou, it’s a journey of highs, lows and even the psychedelic. Mixing through-composed forms with giving his band the freedom to improvise, Shane himself “plays strong backing to the horns, but is also a highly gifted soloist himself, playing like a saxophonist in terms of invention” (Jazz Journal International). “It’s a CD that belongs in every jazz lover’s collection” (Gary Karr).

Shane is a disciple of renowned educator Jim Stinnett. He traveled the country helping to present Mr. Stinnett’s Secret Chambers project, a book and presentation featuring and analyzing the walking and solo lines of the great Paul Chambers. Shane was also a faculty member of Mr. Stinnett’s long running New Hampshire Bass Fest, featuring artists such as Eddie Gomez, Rufus Reid, Gary Karr and more of the best bassists around the world. After Berklee Shane moved to London for six years, working the scene there and touring Europe with his and others’ projects. There he recorded his trio release The Big Smoke Hustle with the great Nigel Price and Jason Reeve.
Now residing in New York City Shane has made a splash on the scene playing with his original quartet at esteemed venues such as The Django, Room 623 and more.

Shane Allessio - upright bass
Chris Brown - guitar Chris Brown is a jazz guitarist known for his innovative style and technique that is steeped in the jazz traditions of Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Grant Green and Charlie Christian. His unique style blends elements of blues, jazz, reggae, funk and rock to the stage captivating audiences with his passion and incredible versatility. Chris honed his craft at the prestigious Berklee College of Music where his deep understanding of theory and improvisation became a trademark.
Jurek Glod - drums JERZY {JUREK} GLOD, born in Poland, began playing guitar – his first instrument – when he was 10 years old. Four years later, switched to playing drums and just a year later, at the age of 15 Jurek started playing professionally at local clubs and events in Poland. In the next few years he formed a jazz trio with Jacek and Wojtek Niedziela. Together, they won numerous awards and competitions including the 1st Prize in the prestigious European Jazz Competition in Leverkusen Germany, where they received the European Young Jazz Artist of 1985 title. As a trio, they formed a rhythm section behind legendary Jan Ptaszyn Wroblewski performing around Poland and making several recordings and many radio and TV appearances.
Bill Jones - saxophones Virtuoso saxophonist Bill Jones grew up Marion, MA and began his Jazz studies at the University of New Hampshire, where he had the opportunity to play with Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, and Slide Hampton. He continued on to pursue his Masters degree at the New England Conservatory where he studied with Jerry Bergonzi, John McNeil, and George Garzone. After graduation, he continued his studies with Charlie Banacos and Hal Crook.
PORTRAIT IN JAZZ -
No strangers to the Fallout Shelter, Portrait in Jazz will be making their fourth trip to the iconic Fallout Shelter Stage. They are all virtuoso players with a deep, diverse and enjoyable repertoire of original music and classic jazz standards.
Gary Bohan (Trumpet/Flugelhorn/Composer) — Gary has performed and recorded with Portrait in Jazz (formerly the Brad Ellenberg Quintet), Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, Jazz Echo, and Naftule's Dream. For 10 years, he recorded and toured throughout North America, Europe, and Australia with the Klezmer Conservatory Band, including with Itzhak Perlman's "In the Fiddler's House" project, which resulted in a PBS documentary and two best-selling recordings. As a composer, Gary has contributed some beautiful compositions to the Portrait In Jazz repertoire. He is the author of “Sharkey: When Sea Lions were Stars of Show Business (1907–1958)” on Excelsior Editions (SUNY Press)
Brad Ellenberg (Guitar/Composer) — Brad has been performing professionally since the 80s in many diverse settings, ranging from a duo to a 20-piece big band, from founding Portrait In Jazz to performing in the pit on numerous shows over the years, filling the role of band leader and freelance guitarist at various stops along the way. He has toured throughout the Northeast US and in England. Having received his Master’s in Jazz Composition at New England Conservatory, many of his compositions comprise the original repertoire heard on the first three CDs from Portrait In Jazz: “Rendezvous,” “Return Engagement,” and “Metamorphosis,” with at least 20 more still unrecorded.
Chris Hildebrand (Sax) — Chris has been passionate about jazz since hearing his first Charlie Parker album in high school. He attended Berklee College of Music on scholarship and Northern Illinois University, playing lead alto for Frank Mantooth’s Jazz band at NIU. After playing as a full-time musician in Chicago in multiple swing and society bands — including some well-known groups like The Temptations and The Four Tops — he obtained a degree in electronics engineering. Since relocating to the Boston area, he has expanded his playing, being influenced by many styles and great players, including funk, gospel, and contemporary jazz.
Grant Smith (Drums/Percussion) — Grant has traveled many paths in world music, jazz, classical, and dance. His theater credits include “Shlemiel The First,” as well as Joel Grey's “Borscht Capades.” He has toured globally from Krakow to Thailand. He performed with Itzhak Perlman on “In The Fiddler's House” and the PBS Great Performances show “Rejoice” with Cantor Helfgot. Grant has played on many memorable stages along the way including Boston Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl, and Washington DC’s Kennedy. Grant was also in the Yidstock All Stars band at the Yiddish Book Center's annual festival.
The Fallout Shelter is an all ages performance venue welcoming worldwide, world class music in an intimate setting. Our studio audience attends to watch the creation and production of the music television series The Extended Play Sessions. The Fallout Shelter events are immersive experiences for both audience and performers alike...a live music experience like no other. We are fully ADA compliant and have wheelchair access. We have a wide selection of beer and wine for your adult beverage pleasures and each show comes with a free commemorative event poster. Our doors open at 6PM. Seating is General Admission.
