ABOUT THE JOHN LUMPKIN INSTITUTE

Since encouraging his friends in their early 20s to pursue degrees in music, JLI founder, John Lumpkin II has always carried out his passion for teaching. After achieving degrees, awards, and private program recognition, John has continued the tradition of passing on the great wealth of music.

From teaching at his local music programs, such as the Cathedral Arts Project, to Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, he has led by example. Thus, his private-study students have been accepted to Institutions such as Florida State College at Jacksonville and The Juilliard School.

As a non-profit 501(c)3, the JL Institute is able to give more to the young musicians in Jacksonville, FL, through donation-based lessons, concerts, and masterclasses. The goal is for each student to develop an understanding of their role in music today and how to be effective communicators through the musical story they wish to tell on and off the stage. This is the JL Institute.

ABOUT PABLO DUQUE

A recent graduate of the University of North Florida, Pablo Duque is a rising saxophonist and composer based in Jacksonville. He graduated with his B.M. in Jazz Studies in the Spring 2024 term.

During his first two years of college, Duque was a member of UNF's Jazz Ensemble 2, and for the past two years, he has had the privilege of being a member of UNF's prestigious JE1, with his latest role being Lead Alto Sax. Additionally, Duque has been involved with the UNF Clarinet Choir and previously performed as a member of the UNF Wind Symphony.

Throughout his time in college, Duque has received scholarships from the Bob Washington Scholarship Foundation and the Wayne Barlow Scholarship through the Jacksonville Jazz Society, and recently placed top three in the North American Saxophone Alliance’s Jazz Competition. In May he performed with UNF’s JE1 in the Jacksonville Jazz Festival.

Alongside these accolades, he has had the opportunity to perform alongside world-class musicians and occasionally collaborates with various wedding and private event bands. Notable figures Duque has performed within JE1 include Michael Mossman and Joe Martin, Jim McNeely, Tim Hagans and Jon Irabagon, and Dennis Mackrel. Outside his academic pursuits, he has shared the stage with esteemed artists such as Teddy Adams, Ulysses Owens Jr., Scott Giddens, Eric Jones, Barry Green, Thomas Milovac, and more. He is associated with the International Musician’s League, regularly performing with their Bay Kings Band and Emerald Empire Band. He is also the primary saxophonist for the entertainment production “The Velvet Underground Show."

Upon completing his B.M. degree, Duque plans to stay in Jacksonville for a few years before eventually heading to New York for the next chapter in his musical career. Until then, he continues freelancing, offering private lessons, and composing for various groups and big band projects. Additionally, he hosts a biweekly jazz jam session at the Volstead, a local speakeasy in downtown Jax, in July he will establish a new residency at Cataluna, a newer upscale restaurant in the area, and he intermittently collaborates with the Jacksonville Jazz Society for events they hold.
