About this Event

Laura Jurd 'Rites & Revelations'

Mercury Prize nominee and former BBC New Generation Artist Laura Jurd brings her extraordinary new project to the stage. Known for her singular, expressive trumpet playing, Jurd seamlessly bridges classical composition and traditional folk music to create vibrant, story-driven soundscapes.

Following recent collaborations with accordionist Martin Green (Lau) and Irish fiddler Ultan O’Brien, Jurd’s latest music delves deeper into folk traditions. Her critically acclaimed October 2025 album, Rites and Revelations, powers these traditional roots with the otherworldly rhythm section of bassist Ruth Goller and drummer Corrie Dick.

For this tour, the band is expanded by two exceptional talents: Yorkshire/Swedish folk violist Cori Smith and genre-defying guitarist Tara Cunningham. Expect an evening of compelling melodies, fiery improvisation, and bold musical crossover.

"The kind of musician I want to be in my next life"Jamie Cullum, BBC Radio 2
"Composer Jurd with her band of co-virtuosos have now pulled-off what might be considered a masterpiece." All About Jazz
"Simply stupendous ... a glorious, shifting collage of sound." BBC Music Magazine

About Laura Jurd

Composer-performer Laura Jurd's unique voice as an improvising trumpet player is at the heart of everything she creates. Her music celebrates and innovates the rich traditions of jazz and folk music, digging into something primal and earthy, whilst taking twists and turns that prove Laura to be one of the UK's most distinctive composer-performers in contemporary music.

As a composer she has collaborated with the London Sinfonietta, the Festival of New Trumpet Music, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the Ligeti Quartet to name a few. She has performed throughout the UK, Europe and beyond with Mercury-nominated band Dinosaur and under-her own name, having played the likes of North Sea, Montréal and Molde International Jazz festivals to name a few.

“Jurd seems unconcerned by transient fashions or enrolment in any kind of scene, and pursues a private muse that draws on jazz, folk traditions from Europe and the Middle East, and the harmonic language of Stravinsky – yet her work is always spiritedly accessible, and often suggests wordless songs” John Fordham, The Guardian
