Carlos Hernández Trio
For this November performance at Jazz at Medium, Carlos Hernández leads a trumpet, bass, and drums
trio in a colorful journey through original compositions and reimagined music from Puerto Rico, Brazil,
Latin America, and the jazz tradition. Bomba, plena, danza, samba, reggae, swing, and jazz come
together in a performance driven by rhythm, improvisation, and the unique possibilities of the trio.
Carlos Hernández
Puerto Rican trumpeter, percussionist, and composer Carlos Hernández brings together the sounds of
his Caribbean roots with a deep foundation in jazz and improvisation. A graduate of the Conservatory of
Music of Puerto Rico, where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz and Caribbean Music, Hernández
draws from a broad musical language shaped by tradition, experimentation, and the rhythmic diversity
of the Caribbean and Latin America.
Gabriel Yañez
Mendocino County-based percussionist, Gabriel Yañez, brings over 20 years of experience and insight.
Having studied under Ralph Humphrey and Gregory Hutchinson, he draws inspiration from jazz greats
like Charlie Parker, Roy Haynes, and Art Blakey, while exploring West African rhythms. A versatile
performer, Yañez is a regional favorite across jazz ensembles, studio sessions, and touring bands and has
performed with the Ukiah Symphony Orchestra.
Pierre Archain
A self-taught musician originally from France, Archain came to the United States more than 40 years ago
