2025 Outstanding Alumna of the Year (Dr. Satsuki Ina)

Satsuki Ina, Ph.D. ’66 was born in the Tule Lake Segregation Center, a WWII maximum security Pr*son camp for Japanese American dissidents. She is co-founder of Tsuru for Solidarity, a nonviolent, direct action project of Japanese American social justice advocates working to end detention sites and support front-line immigrant and refugee communities being targeted by racist, inhumane immigration policies. She has produced two award-winning documentary films, From A Silk Cocoon and Children of the Camps. She is a consultant specializing in community trauma. She is author of The Poet and the Silk Girl: A Memoir of Love, Imprisonment, and Protest.

Keynote: Berkeley’s First Asian Mayor (Adena Ishii)

Mayor Adena Ishii ’14 grew up in Southern California and was involved in the Japanese American community through Nihon-buyō (traditional Japanese dancing). She learned about her Asian American history, as a Japanese, Chinese, and Indian American, which instilled in her a strong sense of justice. Mayor Ishii moved to Berkeley and started at Berkeley City College (BCC), where she became involved in politics in the fight against budget cuts to education. She was the youngest and first woman of color elected President of the local League of Women Voters. Mayor Ishii transferred from BCC to UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business and later graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law. Mayor Ishii is a former Board Member of the Japanese American Women Alumnae of UC Berkeley.

All are welcome! Please join us.
