Meet the Hopkins Family. Jason is only 48 years old and is literally fighting for his life But he is not alone. He is a follower of Christ. And has Gods Army with him in prayer and in friendship.
Jason has an amazing wife Aubrey of 25 years and 2 beautiful daughters Jayden and Lydia
They are members of Calvery Baptist Church in Taylorville and serve in every facet.
I have been given the honor of organizing some blessings for them. As we all know medical care and treatments are overwhelming. Along with travel. Time missed from work. And also trying to squeeze in any normalcy to your life you possibly can on those good days.
Jason and Aubrey are some of the first people standing in line to help others and ask nothing in return. So when I approached them they had to take some time to process the idea of allowing themselves to be vulnerable enough to accept help.
Grab a tissue and read his story. I can not imagine enduring not only the physical part of this. But the emotional and mental toll it takes.
I just pray together we can give this family time together without the constant worry of how the bills will be paid
Here is his story.
Original dx Dec 2018. This time dec 2024.
He was given remission status Oct 2023.
In October 2018 Jason had abdominal pain, which resulted in finding out thru CT that his appendix was swollen and needed removed. The surgeon said he needed a colonoscopy first before doing the appendix. So Dec 28th 2018 he went in for the colonoscopy. Dr. Theile came out and told us it was cancer. Jason went to Barnes Feb 2nd 2019 and got about a foot of colon and appendix removed and received HIPEC, which is a heated chemo treatment was internally in the abdomen cavity. After healing, he underwent 12 rounds of chemo. (chemo every 2 weeks for 24 weeks) afterwards, scans showed he was clear. For 5 years, he was clear.
Fast forward to about October 2024 and he started having what he thought was gall bladder attacks. After a few times, we thought he should get checked out. Dec 2024 he went in for CT and found out his abdominal cavity was filled with fluid and spots. Jan 2025 he did a colonoscopy and confirmed the cancer was back. Consulted with SIU Dr. Sturm and went for 2nd opinion to Barnes.
Dr. Sturm did a diagnostic laproscopy in February and removed 7 liters (15 lbs almost) of fluid and saw tumors all over his peritoneal cavity, including colon, intestines, small bowel, liver, spleen. So no HIPEC this time as it is too advanced.
Hes currently going on chemo treatment #8 this Thursday. He will then be put on maintenance chemo pills to see if they can hold things for awhile.
