Jason Adasiewicz plays Roscoe Mitchell at A Listening Space

On Thursday, August 14, from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM, join us for Jason Adasiewicz plays Roscoe Mitchell at A Listening Space, part of our new summer hours at 305 E. Garfield Blvd.

Jason started as a drummer from the age of nine, and had always been a very physical player. The act of hitting the drums, of using his body to produce volume and tone from the instrument, always appealed to him. He was a prolific player, always practicing and

playing throughout high school and the three years he spent at DePaul University.

Although he started playing the vibraphone in high school, it wasn’t until years later that

it dovetailed into his main instrument. It took another decade of experimentation and creative reckoning before he would become: “Ultra-musical, a fine composer with a deep knowledge of the creative music lineage… poised to be the one to restore the vibraphone to its place of honor at the new jazz table” (John Corbett, DownBeat).

On Roscoe Village, Adasiewicz has transcribed and arranged a selection of Roscoe Mitchell-penned pieces, performing them all on solo vibraphone. Adasiewicz, who has been one of the most in-demand players on contemporary improvised music stages, with his group Sun Rooms, his quintet Rolldown, the ensemble Living By Lanterns (co-led with drummer Mike Reed), and in duets and quartets with saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, is back on the scene after a self-imposed five-year break from music, during which, among other things, he became a carpenter and built his own home studio and practice space, dubbed Hot Juice. It was in the pressure cooker Hot Juice atmosphere, over the course of three days in June, 2023, that Adasiewicz tackled the ferocious Mitchell songbook, having spent five months in the shed doing little else but mastering and crafting these tricky pieces.

Jason has been hailed as “one of the great vibraphonists of our time” (Kevin Whitehead, NPR) and his “recordings... do not come close to capturing the extraordinary tintinnabulation” (Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune)

As we prepare to open our newest project at the former St. Laurence Elementary School, we’re pleased to host a series of experimental programs every Thursday night through August. Wine will be made available for purchase, and as always, we’ll serve complimentary tea throughout the night.
