Japanese Stab Stitch Bookmaking

WHAT WILL I GET FROM THIS WORKSHOP?

This workshop will introduce you to a variety of traditional Japanese bookmaking techniques. You will take away at least three handmade books with instructions and ideas for how to continue the process at home for those who get the bug!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

This workshop will show you how to use the traditional Japanese ‘stab stitch’ method of bookbinding, which is a way of making a book out of loose sheets of paper and binding them with a decorative embroidered edge. We will start with the basic ‘4 hole’ technique, and move through different variations, looking at Kangxi, Hemp Leaf and Tortoise Shell patterns.

You do not need to have done any book binding before to be able to do this workshop, so complete beginners are welcome. However, this workshop will equally suit anyone who has done an Introduction to Book Making and is looking to develop their skills in non-adhesive methods.

You will be taken through how to use the book making equipment, shown how to use it safely and effectively; be guided step-by-step in making a range of books; and shown tips and tricks to get the best out of your bookmaking projects. You will leave with blank books that you can use yourself or give away, and some knowledge and suggestions for how to take bookmaking further.

There is no minimum ability expected, however be mindful that bookmaking requires a moderate degree of hand dexterity (e.g. using a craft knife, using needle and thread).

WHO IS MY TUTOR?

The session is run by Zoe, a qualified and experienced art tutor currently teaching at a specialist arts university in Leeds. She is interested in process-driven arts and hands-on analogue practices. She is a big believer in learning by doing and making mistakes as a form of enquiry, an ethos which underpins her teaching.
