Workshop Description

In this workshop, we’ll explore the art of Japanese Stab-Binding. You will create two unique handmade journals or sketchbooks to take home, and you will learn how to create an entire book with just paper, thread, and a needle. 

Zoe will give an overview of Japanese stab-binding techniques and common book-binding tools, demonstrations on binding, and experimentation with various Japanese stab-binding binding patterns. We’ll cover how to align & prepare pages, make jigs for consistent binding holes, and handle waxed thread. We’ll source our book and cover paper directly from SCRAP, so there’ll be a ton of possibilities for unique journal colors and sizes.

All supplies are included, and no prior experience is necessary!

About the Artist

The workshop is led by Zoe Spikerman, a San Francisco-based artist working across print, paper, and textile crafts. Often using foraged, recycled, and naturally-dyed paper and fiber, she’s especially interested in how the spirit of an artwork is shaped by the life and history of its materiality. Influenced by the ecological ethos of Hawaiʻi, where she was raised among agrarian communities, her artwork explores our complex relationship to the natural world, examining, with both reverence and disdain, the forces that obscure our interconnection as stewards of the Earth. She earned her BFA in Print Media from the California College of Arts, and currently works as an editorial associate for ArtBae.
