These are the everyday meals that Japanese mothers and grandmothers have been making day in and day out, and it’s the food that guest chef Emiko Davies, author of the new book “Gohan,” grew up with. Join her for this livestream class to learn three unfussy, flavor-packed, weeknight meals that will give you a different perspective on cooking and eating in Japan. We start with homemade udon noodles that are sure to surprise you. Requiring no special tools—put away that pasta maker!—and just a couple of minutes to cook, they come together more quickly that you could order takeout. Then, you’ll learn the Japanese art of tempura as you grab seasonal vegetables and gently fry them to golden perfection. We round out our meal with snappy green beans with a sesame dressing that you’ll want to make in big batches, because it’s just as good on a simply prepared vegetable as it is spooned over rice or a fried egg. As we cook, you’ll hear food stories from Emiko’s childhood and get a glimpse into her current home in Tuscany. This class will inspire you to bring Japanese home cooking into your home.
