About this Event

Join us for a special collaboration between Wayfarer Shodo and Hanami Garden. You will create a one-of-a-kind artwork where Ajisai (Hydrangea) is expressed in three different art forms — Japanese calligraphy, sumi-e (ink painting) and handcrafted crystal flowers decorations. Having a mix of art forms in this workshop, you can create an artwork which has both 2D and 3D elements, experience writing, drawing and crafting in one single event — we're confident to say that you cannot find an experience like this anywhere else in Edinburgh!

In this special workshop, you'll discover the cultural meaning behind Ajisai while creating your own hydrangea Japanese calligraphy and ink painting artwork using traditional brushes and ink and finish off your unique artwork with crystal-clear crystal flower made by the amazing Japanese crystal flower artist Hanami Garden as a decoration which elevates the whole artwork. On top of that, you can also enjoy a flower shaped sushi roll or salmon rose sashimi (extra £2 pay at counter) and a complementary drink during the workshop. Participants will also receive an exclusive 25% discount on the entire Sushiya menu after the workshop.

Whether you are a complete beginner or have previous experience with calligraphy, this workshop is designed to be relaxing, creative, and enjoyable for everyone.

Duration: 90-minute workshop + 30-minute enjoying food and drink and writing review + optional dinner at the venue

Workshop Flow

• Ice breaking, introduction to the theme and order a free drink (10–15 mins)
• Grinding ink to calm the mind and prepare for calligraphy practice (10 mins)
• Introduction to brush handling & basic writing techniques (5 mins)
• Practice session (30 mins)
• Short break (5 mins)
• Create your final artwork on official calligraphy paper (20 mins)
• Enjoy dessert, take photos, post social media and write a review (30 mins)
