Learning the history of aprons is like pulling on a loose thread and discovering you’ve unraveled centuries of spills, status symbols, and surprisingly bold fashion choices. What started as a practical shield against flour explosions and rogue gravy splashes turns out to have been worn by everyone from medieval blacksmiths to Victorian ladies making a statement about respectability. Aprons have marched through time surviving kitchen disasters, industrial revolutions, and even trend cycles, proving they’re not just humble fabric rectangles but hardworking witnesses to human history.Tami Finley spent her 40-year career as a public librarian in Iowa and Illinois and during that time, she discovered a niche for programming about vintage aprons and The Art of the Apron was launched in June 2019. Finley has amassed a collection of over 300 aprons and related treasures. She shares their art and history at her programs along with anecdotal stories. The versatile apron conjures up many memories and audiences are encouraged to bring an apron and share their own stories.
Doors open at 6:30PM program to start at 7PM, admission is $5 for non-members, members to Friends of Hauberg Civic Center Foundation get in free.
