Presentation: Ship of Theseus as a Service - Security Testing When Nothing Is Truly Yours

Description:

The ancient Greeks debated whether a ship remained the same vessel after every plank had been replaced. Modern security testers face a similar philosophical puzzle every time they assess a contemporary application. When the authentication is handled by one provider, the data lives in another, the AI features come from a third, and the core logic runs on serverless functions stitched together with APIs, what exactly are you testing? And more importantly, who is responsible when something breaks?
In this talk, Kevin Tackett will explore the unique challenges of security testing applications where the organization owns remarkably little of the actual code executing in their environment. Drawing from penetration testing engagements against modern architectures, he will examine how trust boundaries blur when applications are assembled from external components, how traditional testing methodologies fall short when you cannot access the underlying systems, and how to identify risks that exist in the seams between services rather than within them. Each piece of the ship may be seaworthy on its own, but the way they are fastened together often tells a different story.
Attendees will leave with practical approaches for scoping and executing security tests against applications built on foundations they do not control. The presentation will cover techniques for evaluating third-party integrations, strategies for testing AI components embedded within larger systems, and methods for communicating shared responsibility risks to stakeholders who believe their vendors have security handled. Whether you are a tester trying to wrap your arms around a sprawling modern architecture or a security leader wondering what your team should actually be assessing, this session will help you answer the question of what remains when you strip away everything that belongs to someone else.
