Jane Austen 250 Years: Person, Page and Screen held in the beautiful Buxton Crescent Assembly Room — a perfect setting to explore the life, work, and legacy of Jane Austen.
We have a full and fascinating programme ahead, featuring expert speakers, opportunities for discussion, and time to enjoy the surroundings.

Programme:

10:30am — Arrival (Tea and Coffee available)

11.00am – First Speaker: Marilyn Joice —
Introducing Jane Austen: The Woman and the Writer
As the title suggests, this illustrated talk is divided into two parts covering first, Jane Austen the woman, her life and family, followed by a look at her development as a writer and her influence on the novel.
Marilyn Joice, a retired primary teacher, is the Chairman of the Northern Branch of the Jane Austen Society, which she co-founded in 1999 with five other enthusiastic ‘Janeites.’ She served three terms as a Trustee of the Society, during which time she was involved in setting up the popular Talks Programme, writing many of the talks herself.
Her love of Jane Austen was engendered by an inspirational English teacher, and in 1975, during the bi-centenary celebrations, she became a Life Member of the JAS.

1:30pm — Second Speaker: Emma Westwood
Adapting Austen: Accuracy vs Agenda
In this talk, Emma Westwood, will delve into an adaptation of each of the six major Jane Austen novels and explore the reasons behind the discrepancies and alterations in these productions from the original text – whether they be good, bad or bafflingly bizarre!
Emma Westwood is the Chair of the Jane Austen Society Midlands. Her academic background is in literature and film, specialising in adaptation, and is the producer of an award-winning BFI short film.

3:00pm — Optional Visit to the Crescent Experience
