NlVrij geïnspireerd op de gelijknamige novelle van Georges Bataille, onderzoekt Janaina Leite – een van de spraakmakendste artiesten uit het Braziliaanse theater – de relatie tussen theater en pornografie. Het stuk volgt de structuur van het boek om het verhaal van drie tieners en hun seksuele uitspattingen te vertellen. In een sprookjesachtige setting herscheppen Leite en haar Núcleo do Olho deze duistere fabel tot een magische, bij momenten feestelijke ervaring die balanceert tussen het vulgaire en het sublieme, het alledaagse en het kosmische, het vertrouwde en het onpeilbare. Twaalf performers – amateurs en professionals, sommigen onder hen sekswerkers – nemen het publiek mee in een drie uur durende intense ervaring, met live muziek, theatrale storytelling en live pornografische scènes. Leite gaat samen met haar cast een intieme relatie aan met het werk van Bataille en nodigt het publiek uit hetzelfde te doen. Pornografie wordt een theatervorm waarmee vitale en destructieve impulsen onder de loep worden genomen. História do Olho (‘Geschiedenis van het Oog’) bevraagt onze verhouding tot schaamte en lust, doorbreekt taboes, en zoekt inzicht en instemming via performatieve transgressie. Een subversief pornosprookje, een radicaal avontuur, maar ook een heropvoeding van de blik, en fundamenteel teder en verbindend theater.

S’inspirant librement de l’œuvre éponyme de Georges Bataille, la metteuse en scène Janaina Leite, figure incontournable de la scène brésilienne actuelle, analyse le lien entre le théâtre et la pornographie. La pièce suit le récit originel décrivant les explorations sexuelles de trois adolescent·es. Dans une mise en scène féérique, Leite et Núcleo do Olho restituent cette sombre fable sous la forme d’une expérience magique, parfois même festive, confinant à la fois au vulgaire et au sublime, au banal et au cosmique, au connu et à l’insondable. Douze interprètes professionnel·les ou amateur∙ices, dont des travailleur·euses du sexe, convient le public à une expérience intense faite de récit théâtral, de musique et de scènes pornographiques en direct. Leite et son équipe s’engagent dans une relation intime avec l’œuvre de Bataille et ouvrent cette intimité au public. La pornographie devient ici une forme théâtrale permettant d’aborder nos pulsions à la fois vitales et destructrices. História do Olho (« Histoire de l'œil ») aborde notre rapport à la honte et au désir, aux tabous et à la volonté. La transgression performative permet d’atteindre l’entendement et le consentement. Une fable pornographique subversive, une aventure radicale, mais aussi une manière de nuancer le regard à travers un théâtre tendre et rassembleur.

Inspired by Georges Bataille's scandalous novella of the same name, theatre maker Janaina Leite explores the relationship between theatre and pornography. The play follows the structure of the book to tell the story of three teenagers and their sexual escapades. Working with the Núcleo do Olho, Leite—one of the most intriguing artists in Brazilian theatre—recreates this dark fable as a magical, at times festive, experience. In a fairy-tale setting, it shifts between the vulgar and the sublime, the mundane and the cosmic, the ordinary and the abysmal. Twelve performers—professional and amateur, some of them sex workers—take the audience on an intense, three-hour experience, with live music, theatrical storytelling, and live pornographic scenes. Leite and her cast enter into an intimate relationship with Bataille's work, inviting the audience to do the same. Pornography becomes a theatrical form through which vital and destructive impulses are examined. História do Olho (“Story of the Eye”) explores taboos and questions our relationship with shame and lust, seeking collective insight and consent through performative transgression. Part subversive pornographic fairy tale, part radical adventure, it is a fundamentally tender and connecting piece of theatre that re-educates the gaze.
