Date: Saturday, October 17, 2026, 16:00
Location: Sapientia University, Calea Turzii nr. 4, Room B301.
Ethnic minorities are circumstantial liberals, which means that they can also be circumstantial illiberals. In this talk, Jan Rovny reflects on the conditions under which ethnic minority parties join governing coalitions with illiberal political forces. Building a theoretical model, tested through a combination of quantitative insights and qualitative case analysis, the talk argues two points. First, ethnic parties may share some common interests with illiberal parties, especially in areas of cultural policy. Second, and more important, ethnic parties want to prevent illiberals entering government without them. The talk ultimately highlights the defensive character of ethnic-illiberal collaboration, and the specific premium ethnic parties place on government participation.
