Jan Pittard will be our featured writer in September.
Jan was born in Essex, in the United Kingdom and moved to Australia in 1968, where the family settled in Sydney. Jan and her family relocated from south western Sydney to Wagga Wagga in 2014.
Following her involvement with Booranga, her writing has flourished with the encouragement of her Booranga and Word Play colleagues. These days she writes poetry and non-fiction including memoir, theatre and art reviews and articles on local history. She is a frequent participant in Booranga’s open mics. Her poems have been published in four editions of Booranga’s 'fourW' anthology, in 'Talkabout', the magazine of the Alumni of Wagga Teachers and in the MONA women’s issues blog. Her articles on family and local history have appeared in the Marrickville Heritage Society Journal and the online news platform, Region Riverina. She has written ekphrastic poems in response to the exhibitions 'Hardenvale Our Home in the Suburbs' and 'Cries from the Anthropocene' and to Helen Grace’s short film 'The Immortals'. In 2023 Jan won the open section of the Jugiong Writers’ Festival Catherine Bragg Poetry Competition with her poem 'Murrumbidgee Living'.
Recently Jan has branched out into collage making and is experimenting with combining collage imagery with the texts of her poems.
On 19 September we'll have our usual Open Mic - in which you are all warmly invited to participate.
