Opening the Hyde Hall Talks series is James Ivory, acclaimed director, writer, and producer, best known as one half of the legendary Merchant Ivory Productions. He will introduce a special screening of his masterpiece, The Remains of the Day, which is based on a novel by the Nobel literature laureate Kazuo Ishiguro.
Merchant Ivory Productions was established in 1960 by Ismail Merchant and James Ivory with the goal of creating English-language films. Over the course of their collaboration, the duo produced 44 films, earning 31 Academy Award nominations and winning six Oscars, countless BAFTA awards, as well as Ivory winning the 45th Anniversary Prize in 1992 for directing Howard's End, which was also nominated for the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Hyde Hall shares many of the qualities and themes found in a Merchant-Ivory production, making it a fitting venue for this special event. We are delighted to welcome James Ivory on May 23, 2026, at 4:00 pm for a talk, followed by a screening of The Remains of the Day.
