About this Event
Welcome to the James Farmer, Jr. Freedom's March, Democracy's Education, HBCUs Texas event at Huston-Tillotson University. Join us on Fri Apr 4 at 1:00 PM! Register now! More details coming soon.
The march is part of day 1 Texas HBCU Democracy Schools Conference Series on the campus of Huston-Tillotson University (click here to see conference website). Students across all 9 Texas HBCUs, HBCU stakeholders everywhere, the general public (people of goodwill generally, across the board).
Join us for the March whether you come to the conference or not!
At the conference participants will receive training and then have the opportunity to march solemnly from the campus of the University to the State Capitol to participate in the 89th Texas Legislative Session, recalling democratic commitments in nonviolent philosophy and practice pioneered by luminary civil rights leaders, such as James L. Farmer, Jr.
We will speak at a public hearing of state lawmakers on behalf the historic civic education bill (HB 3296) written by students and stakeholders. The bill aims to provide civic education (pre-partisan) free of charge to the people of Texas through a consortium of Texas HBCUs, county governments, and community partners. Texas’ and America’s HBCUs are great pioneers of civic education philosophy and practice, producing luminary citizens and citizen professionals who helped America fulfill the promise of democracy.
