Jamboree on the AirBe a part of the largest Scouting event in the world. Girls and boys in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Sea Scouts, and Venturers can participate. Once at the ham radio station, the communication typically involves talking on a microphone and listening on the station speakers. However, many forms of specialized communication may also be taking place, such as video communication, digital communication (much like sending a message on your smartphone but transmitted by radio), or communication through a satellite relay or an earth-based relay (called a repeater). The exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), Scout rank, age, and hobbies. The stations you’ll be communicating with can be across town, across the country, or even around the world!
You can try out these activities:
1. Use high power, long range radios to talk to other Scouts across town, across the country, or across the world. This is old-school, way-cool technology.
2. Try leading edge, high-tech digital radio communications to leverage radio and internet technology. Who can you contact?
3. See how to set up your own internet over radio and send messages, emails, and video chats to others.
4. Participate in a “Fox Hunt”. This is a search for a hidden radio transmitter. You will use a radio, special antennas, and your thinking skills to hunt the “fox.”
Radio Merit Badge
Radio is a way to send information, or communications, from one place to another. Broadcasting includes both one-way radio (a person hears the information but can’t
reply) as well as two-way radio (where the same person can both receive and send messages). No internet required.
The Radio Merit Badge classroom sessions will be at the GigaParts classroom, from 9:00am through 11:30am. There will be a one-hour break for lunch. Snacks and drinks will be provided. There are numerous restaurants nearby. After lunch, the Scouts will try out the Jamboree on the Air activities to complete the merit badge requirements.

Archaeology Merit Badge
Understand how cultures evolve and investigate the past using clues our ancestors left behind with the Archeology Merit Badge. Scouts will learn about five archaeological sites in and outside the United States and give a short presentation about their findings to a Cub Scout pack, Scout troop, or peers in their classrooms.
International Archaeology Day is on October 19. GigaParts will participate by offering a fossil finding exploration activity and metal detecting activity within the store. Scouts should explore those activities in the morning. The Archaeology Merit Badge classroom sessions will be at the GigaParts classroom, from 1:30pm through 3:00pm.
