About this Event
Jack and the Spare Hearts are a Kitchener-based 5-piece band who play original tunes with a touch of R&B, a hit of New Wave, a heap of Funk, a pinch of Ska—and an attitude that says we are here to enjoy ourselves. And feel free to do the same.
The band are introducing themselves in the first of a series of shows on Thursday October 26, at The Jazz Room, 59 King Street North in Uptown Waterloo. The evening starts at 8 pm and will include an appearance by their special musical guests Allison Corbett.
This is the second of three performances where the band will enjoy digging in to the sounds they’ve been working on—and sharing some of the amusements it took to get it all this far. Jack Cooper, songwriter and frontman, brings a love of 70’s New Wave, Stax and Motown to a band who’s been around—a couple of horns, some great guitar, and a solid rhythm section.
The result is the R&B romp ‘Worst Kept Secret’, or funk-based tirade ‘All Been Fooled Again’, or the 50s-style horns and camp of ‘Selfie Love’, or the jangly pop of ‘Morning Girl’. Add a musical guest for a few numbers, backed up by the whole band. Wrap it all up with an MC who’s only doing it because they lost a bet. And maybe we’ll have some fun for a night.
As well as playing their own songs, Cooper says, “In this first show we’re also really looking forward to sharing the stage with Richard Garvey, who’s a friend of the Region, and a friend of the band. It’ll be good to see him back in town.” While a night like this is a lot of fun, he points out, “It also takes a lot to put it together. In this case, support from The Region of Waterloo Arts Fund helped us turn a good idea into something good that happens. And apparently we’re something worth hearing.”
