On Saturday, October 10 at 7:30pm, Tom's Place presents
An Evening with
Jaap Blonk - voice, electronics
Tom Djll - trumpet, electronics
Gino Robair - piano, electronics
This show will feature Jaap, Tom and Gino interacting in various combinations, company style.
Jaap Blonk, visiting from the Netherlands, is a composer, performer and poet. He is one of the worlds premier exponents of sound poetry performance -- his renditions of Kurt Schwitters' Ursonate are not to be missed. (But, alas, probably not on Saturday's program.) He is unique for his powerful stage presence and almost childlike freedom in improvisation, combined with a keen grasp of structure. We're pleased to have him back for the third time at Tom's Place.
I like this quote about Tom Djll from The Wire: "Tom Djll has been making thoughtful, elegant music for nearly 30 years and has taken the trumpet as far beyond its silver, snarling vernacular as it is possible to go, and as far from the extended technique proponents as Bill Dixon is from Roy Castle."
I hate writing these announcements. Here's ChatGPT's bio of Gino Robair:
"Gino Robair is a San Francisco Bay Area composer, improviser, percussionist, and electronics artist known for inventive work with prepared piano, percussion, and electronic sound. He has collaborated with artists including Tom Waits, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, and Terry Riley, and has been a leading figure in experimental music for decades."
Doesn't really capture the subtlety of Gino's timbral explorativeness and chaotic presentation, but you know that if he's playing it'll be a good show.
