The Lace Mill and Conundrum Music Productions are excited to present avant-vocalist / sound poet Jaap Blonk and saxophonist Jorrit Dijkstra on February 8, 2026. Blonk will play a solo set, including a couple of sound poems and some of his own pieces.
Dijkstra will present a solo improv set.
Blonk and Dijkstra will then perform a duo set.
Jaap Blonk (born 1953 in Woerden, Netherlands) is a self-taught composer, performer, poet and visual artist.
His unfinished studies in mathematics and musicology mainly created a penchant for activities in a Dada vein, as did several unsuccessful jobs in offices and other well-organized systems.
In the early 1980s he discovered the power and flexibility of his voice, and set out on a long-term research of phonetics and the possibilities of the human voice.
At present, he has developed into a specialist in the creation and performance of sound poetry and a unique vocal improviser, supported by a powerful and uninhibited stage presence. He has performed and taught around the world, on all continents. With the use of live electronics and sometimes projection of visuals the scope and range of his concerts has acquired a considerable extension.
The music of saxophonist and composer Jorrit Dijkstra (Netherlands, 1966) draws from the jazz tradition in spirit and sound; but has crossed stylistic and cultural borders in order to express a strong, ever evolving personal vision. He spent his formative years in Amsterdam’s vibrant improvisation community playing jazz, free improvisation, and world music. Since moving to the United States in 2002, Dijkstra has deepened his affinity with the experimental forces of American music.
Dijkstra and Blonk first worked together in the 1990’s in Blonk’s group Splinks. After his move to Boston Dijkstra invited Jaap a number of times to improvisation concerts with local Boston musicians such as Pandelis Karayorgis, Jeb Bishop and Nate McBride. In 2015 Blonk was a guest to concerts with Dijkstra’s group The Whammies, featuring some of Steve Lacy’s Dada-themed compositions.
