J. S. and C. P. E. Bach: Friends, Colleagues, and Mentors

About this Event

The musical world of the late 17th and 18th centuries was shaped by a remarkable network of artistic relationships—teachers and students, fathers and sons, colleagues and friends—through which musical ideas were passed from one generation to the next. This program explores the rich musical circle surrounding Johann Sebastian Bach
(1685–1750) and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714–1788), tracing a lineage of influence that extends from the expressive counterpoint of the late Baroque to the emotional language that helped usher in the Classical era.

This program will feature works by J.S. and C.P.E. Bach and works of their close friends and colleagues. Other composers will include Pisendel, Buxtehude, Bohm, Telemann, Benda, and Janitsch. The concert will contrast the more contrapuntal and older style works of J.S. Bach and others with the forward looking galant style of C.P.E. Bach and others in the court of Frederick der Grosse.

Performers are Jesse Lepkoff, traverso, & recorders; Emlyn Ngai, violin; Andrew Bortvin, harpsichord & chamber organ; and Jennifer Morsches, cello & piccolo cello.
