J-Film | The Hidden Fortress

Presented by the Japan Information & Culture Center, Embassy of Japan and Japan Commerce Association of Washington D.C.

On the occasion of America’s 250th birthday , we are excited to continue our special film series, Double Exposure, a celebration of the history of cultural and cinematic exchange between the U.S. and Japan. Our next film is the KUROSAWA Akira classic, The Hidden Fortress. ⚔️

Originally released in 1958, The Hidden Fortress has excited audiences and influenced filmmakers for decades. The film is a stunning samurai epic with a twist: instead of focusing solely on the princess or her general, the story is told from the point of view of two bickering peasants who are both witnesses and participants in the saga—a narrative structure that went on to inspire George Lucas’ creation of Star Wars.

Join us on June 4th for this next screening in our summer of great films! 🎞️

In Japanese with English Subs | Japan | December 1958 | Not Rated | 139 min | Drama, Classic| Directed by KUROSAWA Akira
