Weston Olencki & Laura Cocks
Weston Olencki and Laura Cocks present ‘Music for Two Flutes’, two pieces for two flutes. Through various deconstructions of the instrument, they pull uncanny resonances from these modest means—locating sites of intensity and spectral saturation where they aren't always found.
1. ceòl meadhonach
From the Kilberry Book of Ceol Meadhonach, published in 1908 by Captain John Campbell and Archibald Campbell:
"The music of the Highland bagpipe is usually said to be divided into three categories: Ceol Mor, the "big music" or Piobaireachd; Ceol Beag, the "little music," that is quicksteps and dance music, and Ceol Meadhonach, the "middle music" which lies between the other two, and consists of such tunes as are neither constructed in the measure of Piobaireachd, nor adapted for the quick march or dance."
2. SLUB
As an instrument activated via buzzing, the flute’s scales and acoustic systems are reconfigured; SLUB is the act of submerging into the instabilities of this reconfiguration, building a world of internal physical disturbance that shifts, envelopes, and becomes quasi-environmental as it moves along the body of the flutes.
Weston Olencki is a composer, musician, and audio engineer; originally from South Carolina, living and working now in Berlin. He’s currently making work focused around questions of instrumental music and its contexts/constructs, and the technological, material, and cultural histories of vernacular art-making. His recent work deals with the non-linear relationships between experimental sound, geography, historicity, and (mostly American) musical traditions.
Laura Cocks is a flutist with “febrile instrumental prowess” (The New York Times), who works in a wide array of environments as a performer of experimental music. They are the executive director and flutist of TAK ensemble, one of the most prominent ensembles in the United States, and an active member of the Talea Ensemble.

Vasco Alves
Vasco Alves' work investigates the materiality of sound and aspects of acoustic phenomena through the use of minimal and unstable processes, which may include synthesis, amplification techniques or the gaita de fole (portuguese bagpipes).
With the bagpipes, the focus lies in exploiting the instrument's physical limits, its morphology —in permanent development—and the performative act. Fundamentally acoustic, his work can also be presented against computer generated sound.
He leads the exploratory bagpipe ensemble As Rochas da Ajuda, approaching the instrument from a collective perspective and exploring the possibilities of polyphony. Other ongoing collaborations include OndaXoque (with Pedro Rufino), a duo with Margarida Garcia and GAX (with Seymour Wright).
