and so bazip zeehok it is. that is, as it were: vocals, guitar, percussion. a three-piece formed in the second half of the year twothousandtwentytwo, simply because. instant compositions, with corresponding dutch poetic lyricism. live maybe some in english too. and what else would one might like to know about that? well, this, perhaps?
about the cd:
“in over 45 minutes they let 10 songs pass in review. or songs, they are rather musical works of art where improvisation is paramount. just as spontaneously as the group came together, their musical ideas also come squirting out like a leaky fountain; even where you don’t expect it. the whole thing goes from tight guitar parts to guitar struggles, from small exciting rolls to artfully stumbling drum parts and from spoken word to poetic vocals and almost screams. “no, then bazip zeehok, named after the main character from a 1969 novel by legendary dutch writer c. buddingh’. three old hands, each of whom i have seen countless times before – often as improvisers: percussionist gert jan prins, guitarist lukas simonis and wordsmith gw sok. ‘three times better,’ to quote a classic advertisement for mascotte rolling papers.
cross-fried songs, with prins not infrequently working his drums with plumes and simonis playing cracking box guitar. over that, sok does what he rarely, if ever, did in the past: sing. at least, that’s what it seems like. in doing so, he consistently keeps his own rhythm, which leads to pleasantly curious effects.”
