It’s Carnival Time – Superheroes of ResistanceThis October half term, families are invited to join Ithalia Johnson and her team for a free, creative project celebrating Caribbean Carnival in Liverpool.
Through two fun and interactive workshops:
Monday 27 October, 10am – 4pm
Thursday 30 October, 5pm – 8pm
participants will:
Watch live performance excerpts of Ithalia Johnson’s The Untold Stories of a Carnival Queen to learn about Windrush stories and share family migration histories.
Discover Liverpool’s first Caribbean Carnival in 1978 – its meaning for community, identity, joy, and resistance.
Take part in fun, creative activities and discussions exploring why Carnival matters – its roots, resistance, and celebration.
Express themselves through dance and song.
Get hands-on with costume making, creating your own Superhero of Resistance inspired by the iconic Blue Devil, a playful and powerful Carnival character from Trinidad & Tobago.
Are you ready to Get Blue?
Step into the world of the Blue Devils – playful, powerful Carnival characters born from Caribbean resistance. The workshops will prepare you to become and create your own Superhero of Resistance, design your costume, learn dance moves and songs, and optionally take part in the Katumba Halloween Carnival Parade at 7pm on 31 October 2025.
All welcome – completely free.
Bring your imagination, your stories, and your pride – and step into Carnival!
This project has been made possible thanks to a Black History Month Creative Grant via Liverpool City Council, supported by UK Shared Prosperity Funding and Arts Council England.
