🇺🇸 THE SLOAN CENTENNIAL FLAG 🇺🇸
For the first time in nearly 50 years, a giant American flag created for the nation's Centennial celebration in 1876 will be displayed to the public.
Measuring approximately 12 feet by 18 feet, the Sloan Centennial Flag has been preserved by six generations of the Sloan family and has survived nearly 150 years of American history. The flag's original owner, Civil War veteran David Livingston Sloan, served with the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a regiment known for its service in Key West during the Civil War. After the war, Sloan became a founder of Maryland's Singerly Fire Company, and family tradition holds that the flag was carried in fire company parades and displayed at the Sloan family home for generations.
The last public display of the flag was during America's Bicentennial in 1976. Now, as the nation celebrates its 250th Anniversary, the flag returns to public view at the Alex Vega Key West Firehouse Museum.
