7 day course comprising 5 days of classroom activity, with outdoor scenarios in the evening, followed by 2 days of outdoor activity, mainly on the water, combining WFR skills and incident management. One evening will also include a night exercise with the Dunbar RNLI station (weather permitting). The course is open to anyone at intermediate level or above but would typically suit sea kayak award level paddlers and above, especially leaders and those interested in expedition paddling. It meets and exceeds the “first aid” qualification requirements to support Paddle UK (BCAB/SCA etc) leader, coaching and guide qualifications and the WFR qualification has become a mandatory requirement for all qualified/ aspirant ISKGA guides.
This is the first course of its kind ISKGA are running in Scotland and a one-off discounted rate of £700 (£650 + £50 per individual for disposables) is offered for this inaugural course only. This compares favourably with typical WFR/MWFR course fees of around £1100 quoted by most providers.
Course Tutors are Paul Cahill (Advanced paramedic and paramedic instructor) and Dr David McNeil (MBChB, BDS, WEMSI Wilderness Physician, NUCO Assessor).
Attendees will receive regular emails containing course material in the few weeks leading up the to the course (learning this material prior to the course is NOT mandatory and is just for those who would like to digest the information over a longer period).
The course is non residential however vans can stay at Dunbar harbour (where the venue is also located) for £10 per night with access to public toilets and shower facilities either at the club or the very nearby ( 1-2 minutes walk) leisure centre. There are also a number of campsites in the area and lots of rental accommodation - the Dolphin hostel is 400m away.
