About this Event

PDCA’s Forum Monday, September 14, 12 PM at George Washington University’s Elliot School
President Trump and members of his administration have argued that the true measure of American foreign policy success is not whether the United States is more liked abroad, but whether it is more respected. Much as effective teachers seek respect rather than popularity, the administration contends that America's global standing depends on strength, credibility, and the willingness to defend its interests—not on favorable public opinion.
To support this argument, President Trump has pointed to a range of indicators: countries seeking negotiations with the United States, allies increasing defense spending, foreign leaders adjusting their policies in response to American pressure, and renewed attention to U.S. economic and military power. Together, the administration argues, these developments demonstrate that the United States is once again perceived to be a decisive global leader capable of shaping international behavior.
But do these developments reflect how foreign publics actually view the United States generally and the Trump administration’s foreign policy specifically?
A distinguished panel of international journalists will address these issues, exploring the following questions:

  • Has the America First foreign policy increased global respect for the United States, even if it has not increased its popularity?
  • Is the United States perceived to be a more credible and effective leader in the eyes of allies and adversaries?
  • What do global public opinion trends reveal about America's reputation, influence, and long-term strategic position?

The event will take place at noon at GWU's Lindner Family Commons at the Elliott School (1957 E Street, NW, Room 602, Washington, D.C. 20052). For those who RSVP and arrive before 11:40 a.m., a light lunch will be provided. The event is co-sponsored the GWU Elliott School of International Affairs, the GW Institute for Public Diplomacy & Global Communication, and the USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership & Policy.
