Speaker Bruno Lena: Bruno currently serves as a Water and Cropping System Extension Educator for Nebraska Extension, covering three counties. Additionally, he holds the position of Program Area Leader for the Water and Cropping System Program Area within Nebraska Extension. With a background in agronomy and a Master's and PhD in Agricultural System Engineering, Bruno brings extensive expertise to his role. Prior to joining Nebraska Extension, he spent two years as an Assistant Professor at Mid-West State University in Brazil and three years as a Post-Doctorate at Auburn University. With over 15 years of experience, Bruno specializes in crop water demand, irrigation scheduling, soil moisture sensing technologies, informed-based irrigation decisions, and precision irrigation. As an Extension Educator, Bruno's primary focus is assisting producers in conducting on-farm research and identifying best management practices. His areas of interest include the use of soil moisture sensor-based irrigation schedules to promote irrigation best management practices, implementing efficient management practices to mitigate nitrate issues in Nebraska groundwater, and employing co-learning and co-participatory extension approaches to increase the adoption and retention of more efficient farming practices.
Speaker Reimar Carlesso: Graduated in Agronomy (1982) and pursued with a Master's Degree in Agricultural Engineering (1987) at Federal University of Santa Maria, and a PhD in Crop And Soil Science, at Michigan State University, USA (1993). He was full professor of the Rural Engineering Department at Federal University of Santa Maria from 1985 to 2018 when retired, and during his career he has been enrolled in graduate programs, with dozens PhD thesis advised and has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers. The main objectives of his researches and business strategies are development strategies to improve water and energy use efficiency in irrigated areas, providing irrigation management service in 20+ countries, particularly for seed production companies. In 2008, he patented the Irrigation Management Computerized System (Computer Program), which generated a spinoff company named Irriga System (headquarter in Switzerland), to support the growers demand for a reliable irrigation management service initially in South America. Nowadays, Irriga System provides irrigation management service for more than 500 000 hectares yearly in Africa, North & South America, Europa and Asia.
Speaker Dr. Daniel Davidson: Has worked in field research, field technical support, communications, and technology transfer. He worked as product development specialist for three midwestern consulting firms, staff agronomist for DTN, Director of Research and Project Manager for the Illinois Soybean Association. Currently he works as an independent consultant evaluating research trials and on-farm field projects that evaluate a wide range of technology and products. Davidson holds a doctorate in agronomy from Washington State University, master’s from the University of Missouri and bachelor’s from the University of Nebraska. He also holds two associates of arts degrees. He has a passion for conducting science and communicating practical results. He was raised on a farm in Eastern Nebraska that he continues to manage for the family and conducts his own agronomy trials. He has a passion for agronomy, crop management, crop diagnostic, and soil health and management. He has been evaluating biological products both on his farm and in projects for over a decade and found that these products have a plant in a crop production system, can reduce input use and improve sustainability. He has long felt that if farmers learned to farm their soil just as they excel at farming their crops they will improve productivity, profitability, and sustainability of their operation.
