Iron Altar
Formed in Edinburgh in 2016 the Scottish 5 piece draw influence from a range of progressive
death metal, discordant sludge and visceral metallic hardcore. The band have extensively
toured the UK and Ireland, increasingly prevalent since 2023’s well received record
‘Promethean’ was released via Trepanation Recordings. The band have appeared alongside
a wide range of acts including Heriot, Conan, Hellripper, Blood Red Throne and Baest as well
as appearances at numerous festivals including Bloodstock 2023. A new record for 2026
(Title and release TBC) has just been tracked at No Studio in Manchester with mastermind
Joe Clayton (Conjurer, Wallowing, Underdark) behind the desk. The new album features the
most focussed, punishing and ambitious material the band has produced, with the band
pushing themselves in intensity, performance and songwriting.

Iron Altar musically harness their own four horsemen of the apocalypse. Although one might
imagine the ravages of the biblical foursome of Death, Famine, War, and Conquest, the song
spawns powerful visions of Rage, Madness, Desolation, and Despair, inflicted not by some
world-ending divinity but by a deeply flawed humanity …. The product of ruthlessly jolting
grooves, boiling guitar swarms, terrifying screams, and monstrous roars. As the riffing evolves
the pile-driver beatings continue, it channels cold-eyed, heavyweight cruelty interspersed with
chords that drag and moan
No Clean Singing
Stirring together a concoction of death and sludge metal with some progressive garnish, their
heavy-as-hell new album Promethean aims to explore those themes with all the weight andviolence you’d expect … dense and caloric, the proper meal for anyone who likes their metal
elephantine without sacrificing the tenets of melody and progression …. This five-piece
accelerates when needed, like a starving beast using its last crumb of stamina to latch onto
protein-packed prey, and pulls back into a slower drudge after the feast.
- Everything is Noise
Promethean is an achievement comparable to the best of Misery Signals (arguably the best
metalcore band ever) and but, interestingly, it’s riddled with genuine death metal (Mortality),
thrash (Hunted) and groove (Miasmic Intuition) overtones. In a very real sense, Iron Altar has
created an album that defies genre categorization (see the number of tags under the review)
and that is a rare and great achievement alone ….. Any way you slice it, Promethean²⁰²³ is
one hell of a record
- Eternal Terror
IRON ALTAR play an unrelenting brand of metal that kicks like a mule on crystal meth …. This
album is a primal voyage from start to finish. Relentless, unforgiving, and essential listening!
- Devils Gate Music
Iron Altar give an idea of both ends of their scale. Stupidly slow and heavy in the former, and
sandblasting your face in the latter.
- Moshville Times
The rawness of doom metal, the brutality of death metal alongside impressive technicality to
provide an intriguing offering which sets them apart from the pack.
- Distorted Sound
Promethean features nine tracks that showcase Iron Altar's ability to merge multiple metal
genres into a cohesive and dynamic sound. An impressive album that metal enthusiasts
should definitely check out. Promethean puts the band's skill and distinct style, which
incorporates various metal sub-genres, on full display.
- Get Heavy UK
Scotland’s Iron Altar are here blending death and sludge metal together into an irresistibly
catchy jam. If you listen closely, you may hear subtle hints of 2000s metalcore tucked away in
their sound as well.- Decibel Magazine
Iron Altar have been plying their trade since 2016 and bring a sound of gargantuan
proportions. It’s a heady mix of styles, featuring huge hooks, visceral breakdowns, and jagged
riffs that could cause infection if you crossed them in the wrong manne
Old Corpse Road are steeped in the history of Britain; they breathe the myths and legends that form the fabric of this island kingdom. Every note of their unique black metal is infused with the magic of spells thought long forgotten and the ghosts of ancient days haunt the spaces between those notes. Since their bewitching first album, ‘Tis Witching Hour…As Spectres We Haunt This Kingdom, released on Godreah Records in 2012, Old Corpse Road have spoken to those with a yearning for the past and a flame in their hearts that burns brighter when mists hang low over frost rimed fields. Metal Hammer hailed the band as “consummate storytellers, with timeless tales of the fecund darkness that lurks beneath the surface of England’s green and pleasant land” . With each album Old Corpse Road come forth with more truths, secrets and incantations from the moonlit meadows.
Local to the homeland of black metal's namesake and freshly risen from the disgusting lichen of Newcastle's decaying fortresses, Evil Dungeon Crawler promise to deliver a fast-paced, Christ-defying attack, evoking the brutal memory of early 90's Norwegian acts with their raw nature. While taking on a more raw appearance and sound, woven into their hateful cries is home-brewed lore from a land long forgotten; tales of jealous, undead souls desperately clambering their way out of Hell for ownership of the physical realm, while warring factions destroy each other for false Gods.
Hailing from the industrial heart of Hull, Darkened Void is a sonic storm of aggression and atmosphere. As a premier melodic death metal force from the North East, the band captures the duality of the genre: the crushing heaviness of the void and the soaring, dual-guitar harmonies that define the melodic death metal legacy.
