Granary and Farming & Construction

Timing: 10am to 3pm

From ATC: “A granary session enables children to engage in one of the most essential of historical jobs, providing them with a realistic perspective – and taste – of life in the past. During the session the children will use either saddle or rotary quern stones, depending on the period of their study, to grind wheat and make flour. Mixing with period specific ingredients, typically water, salt, olive oil and herbs, the children will make flat breads, which they may taste once cooked over the fire. This session develops commitment and persistence to a physically demanding task and encourages children to question our modern perspective and value of food.
Farming & Construction: This is the most essential of historical jobs, providing an insight into daily life in the past. The specific jobs performed here are variable and dependent on the season, weather and needs of the site. The children may process firewood, using saws and froes to cut the wood to size, and stack this on a wood pile. Alternatively, they may make cob bricks or contribute to growing crops by tilling the soil, planting seeds, weeding or harvesting. This session encourages commitment and persistence with physically demanding tasks, and cooperation as children work together to use the tools.”
