About this Event

IOE Public Engagement Masterclass Series

Across the sessions, award-winning IOE researchers with extensive experience in public engagement will share practical insights, approaches, and lessons learned from their work. Each masterclass will include opportunities for discussion and questions, as well as space for participants to reflect on their own experiences. Attendees will also be invited to provide feedback on IOE ’s public engagement support, helping to inform future provision and embed public engagement more effectively across our research culture.

Masterclass 2 - 5th February 2026 - Professor Evangelos Himonides/Dr Thomas Moors

This masterclass is led by and , whose long-standing collaboration brings together research, clinical practice, and the creative arts to deliver inclusive and impactful public engagement. The session will be chaired by , Co-Head of Research, Department of Culture, Communication and Media, IOE.

Professor Himonides is Professor of Technology, Education, and Music in IOE’s Department of Culture, Communication and Media. Dr Moors is a medical doctor with a specialist interest in voice pathology and the founder of , a charity that uses music, beatboxing, singing, and creative arts to support people who have undergone laryngectomy (voice-box removal), helping them rebuild speech, confidence, and social participation.

Together, they work closely with clinicians, musicians, people with lived experience of laryngectomy, and young people from East London. Their public engagement practice centres on co-creation, using workshops, performances, podcasts, and digital media to explore voice change, identity, inclusion, and recovery. This work foregrounds lived experience and practitioner insight, ensuring that engagement activities are meaningful, ethical, and mutually beneficial for all involved.

The collaboration was awarded the Provost’s Public Engagement Experimentation Award in 2020 and recently marked a decade of impact with a public celebration event at King’s Place in late 2025.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A and a short listening exercise to gather participants’ perspectives on public engagement at IOE and UCL. Further support and training opportunities will be shared with all attendees.

This event is open to all staff and students at UCL, and is particularly suited to IOE researchers, including research students, interested in developing their public engagement practice to ensure our research demonstrates tangible benefits beyond academia.

The masterclasses are organised by IOE Research Development to mark IOE Public Engagement Month. These masterclasses highlight the importance of considering public engagement as a core part of research by creating opportunities for dialogue with communities, industry, and policymakers. This enhances the applicability, social relevance, and visibility of our work. You are welcome to join this and all other sessions.
