Investing for Beginners

What do you want your future to be? When should you start investing? How do you start?

Understanding the basics of investing can be a key to your financial wellness. Our goal is to review some of these basics – to help you learn how to make smart, informed decisions about how to invest for your future. We will explain the different investment choices you have and review some of the key factors to consider as you choose your investments as well as some ways to manage your investments. The financial decisions you make now can have a considerable impact towards pursuing the lifestyle you envision.

Catherine “Cat” Portner is on a mission to ensure that women and girls invest in themselves, their futures and communities. She transforms financial fears into hope and ultimately, joy by delivering holistic strategies with sincere personal attention. She previously owned Portner Brewhouse, a brewery restaurant, inspired by her great-great grandfather’s pre-Prohibition brewery, both located in Alexandria, VA. In 2016, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce named Catherine a 40 Under 40 business leader. She holds a MBA from Babson College in Wellesley, MA and B.S. in Biology from Boston College. Catherine strives to make time for practicing tai chi, travel and spending time with her 18 month old daughter, Josephine, and fantastic partner, Keiron in Reston, VA.

Michael measures success by the relationships he has with clients and the outcomes they enjoy. His mission is to put their wealth to work, minds at ease and goals within reach. He is celebrating 25 years in financial services. Michael was born in Washington DC and grew up in the Northern Virginia area. He is a former resident and owner in Colonial Village in Arlington. He attended and graduated from Bishop Ireton high school and George Washington University. Michael currently lives in Kingstowne area with his wife and two kids.

Refund, Cancellation, No Show & Re-Scheduling Policy:

Participants who register for the workshop and do not attend or cancel their registration less than 24 hours prior to the start of the program, will not receive a refund.

Refunds (not including the processing fee) will be issued with 24 hour cancellation notice after the program has completed. Please submit your refund request for the event to: [email protected]

Participants who are not able to attend and have contacted the Women’s Center 24 hours prior to the workshop can re-schedule for the same workshop on another day, up to 6 months after the initial workshop date.

Full refunds will be issued for any program cancelled by The Women’s Center. If the program is rescheduled, we will offer to transfer the cost to the new date in lieu of a refund.
