The Red Lion Inn, located at 55 High Street in Southampton, is renowned for its rich history and numerous ghostly tales. Dating back to the late 15th or early 16th century, this Grade II* listed pub is considered one of the city’s most haunted locations. One of the most famous legends associated with the Red Lion is its connection to the Southampton Plot of 1415. According to local lore, the inn’s half-timbered room, known as the “court room,” was the site where conspirators Richard, Earl of Cambridge; Lord Scrope of Masham; and Sir Thomas Grey of Heaton were tried for plotting against King Henry V. Following their conviction, they were executed, and some say their mournful spirits have been seen processing from the inn.
In addition to this tale, the Red Lion is said to be home to over 20 ghosts. One such spirit is that of a former barmaid in her sixties, who reportedly drifts through the bar area, visible only above the knees. Another specter, known as Bruce, is believed to haunt the cellar, where the sound of heavy boots marching can often be heard.
These stories contribute to the Red Lion’s reputation as a focal point for paranormal activity in Southampton, attracting both locals and visitors intrigued by its haunted history.
