About this Event
In this three-hour hands-on workshop, we’ll use woodworking tools and techniques to turn a board into a pair of assembled bookends.
During the workshop, we’ll talk through the process, explain some fundamentals, and walk through a safety briefing. Once the basics are out of the way, each workshop attendee will work on laying out, cutting, shaping, and assembling their bookends, guided by our staff. You can use our provided template or follow your creativity and tweak your design. Finally, we’ll walk through some basic finishing techniques you can use to protect your project for years to come!
Along the way, we’ll learn how to safely and effectively use some of the most common woodworking power tools - band saws, miter saws, routers, and sanders. We’ll also discuss techniques for assembling woodworking projects - such as joinery, glue, nails, and screws - and for finishing and protecting them once assembled, including stain, paint, polyurethane, and varnish.
Attendees will leave this workshop with an understanding of how to safely use a range of common woodworking power and hand tools, knowledge of common topics in woodworking such as assembly and finishing, and a set of handmade bookends to show off or give as a gift!
The photos below illustrate some of the steps of construction using the standard workshop materials (select pine). Other wood options such as hickory, oak, and maple are available as add-ons during registration.
