Do you want to learn to weave on a floor loom? This 5 day class combines our Weaving 101 and 201 classes into one session.
Dates : Monday Jul 22 - Friday July 26 9:30 am – 3:30 pm all 5 days. Ticket: $300. Instructor: Janie Yates. Materials fee: $10 packet fee + Materials Fee payable to instructor on first day. Skills Needed: Beginner Class. Class Limit: 6
Do you think you have an interest in weaving on a floor loom? This five day class is designed as a combination of our Beginning Weaving 101 and 201 classes. Taking the two classes in succession will help you as the new weaver to gain more comfort with winding a warp and dressing a loom This five day class is designed to help you discover the magic, fun and endless possibilities of weaving on a floor loom. You will wind two warps and complete two projects in this one week class.
The first project will be a simple plain weave scarf in a chunky weight yarn. You will be introduced to some of the basics of weaving, learning some basic weaving terminology, parts of a loom and how they work, learning to wind a warp, dress a loom and read a draft. The scarf will be completed in the first two days of camp.
For the second project, days 3-5, you will take the next step in your weaving adventure using a finer cotton weaving yarn and learning how to make a warp with multiple colors and multiple threadings. For this project you will weave fingertip towels in twill, each with a different treadling sequence and therefore a different pattern. You will build on your knowledge of reading and interpreting weaving drafts and will learn more about various weave structures. You will also learn how to hemstitch the ends of your towels.
Fibers/materials for this class will be provided by the instructor. Students should be prepared to pay the $10 packet fee along with the materials fee (will vary) on the first day of class. Cash, check or Venmo only will be accepted.
Students should pack a lunch and a beverage. A refrigerator and microwave are available

About Janie…If I had to describe myself in one line it would be this: Jane of All Trades, Artist at Large. For a very long time I felt pressure to narrow my focus and pick one media to master but I just could not do it. I am not just a weaver or a painter or a clothing designer or a teacher. I am all of these and more.
By the time I entered college I was proficient in crochet, macrame, tatting, embroidery, beadwork and sewing. I began my college career with and emphasis in drawing and painting but switched half way though to textiles. It was at Berea College that I learned to weave and to dye fabric using shibori and batik. After college I added colored pencil painting, decorative painting, clothing design, basketry, beaded jewelry, spinning, kumihimo, bobbin lace, several forms of band weaving, shoe making to my list of trades.
I married soon after college and had my son and daughter and for the next 24 years was very fortunate to be a full time mom. While my children were growing up I continued to acquire new skills and perfect existing ones through study, research and workshops. During this time I also began teaching numerous and widely varied textile related classes to children and adults. It gives me great satisfaction to teach a student a new skill that brings them joy.
I still have a very deep need to learn about and do everything related to yarn and fabric. And I still love to draw and paint. And I love to teach. I have about 14 pans in the fire at all times ... and that’s just fine.
Depending on the CDC guidelines for Hamilton County at the time the class is held, a mask may be required. If so, you will be notified before the first class.
If you are not feeling well, please contact the instructor instead of coming to the class. On a case-by-case basis, we may be able to reschedule you into a future class or provide a make-up lesson. Ticket fees are not normally refunded.
Unless specifically stated, Weavers Guild classes are designed for ages 18 and above. On a case-by-case basis, a minor may be permitted to register for a class but must be accompanied by a registered adult who agrees to assist the minor during the class. Contact the Education Committee Chair at [email protected] for permission before registering any minor in a class.
Fees are non-refundable. Your fee will only be refunded if the class is canceled or changed to a different date. Three registrations are required for a class to be held. Students will be notified before the start date if a class is canceled due to an insufficient number of students. Eventbrite processing and credit card payment fees will not be refunded if a student cancels for any reason.
