Solitary bee field workshop led by Andrew Jarman
About this Event

Join us for a 1-day workshop at Water of Leith Visitor Centre for an ‘Introduction to the solitary bees of south and central Scotland’. Led by specialist, Andrew Jarman, the morning session will be classroom-based and will introduce you to the solitary bee species in our area, their lifestyles, where and when to find them, and how to identify them for recording purposes. There will be a chance to key preserved specimens using microscopes. In the afternoon we’ll head along the Water of Leith in the hope of finding and recording solitary bees (weather permitting!).


Suitable for: Beginners, ages 16+

What to bring: Suitable outdoor footwear and clothing, waterproofs/ sunscreen and sunhat (as weather dictates), notepad and pen. If you have one, please bring a hand lens (spares will be available). Teas/coffees will be provided but please bring lunch.


Cost: Free – donations to TWIC welcome. Please note that a charge may apply for on-street parking - details of potential charges available on the Edinburgh Council Website.


Booking for this workshop is essential as places will be limited.

Travel: The Water of Leith Visitor Centre is situated in a renovated schoolhouse by the Water of Leith at Lanark Road in Slateford, easily accessible 4 miles west of Edinburgh City Centre on the A70.

Bus numbers 20, 34, 36 and 44 stop outside the Centre. And Slateford Railway Station is a short walk away.

There is a small car park and free on street parking a short walk away.
