The Japanese Tea Ceremony began as a symbol of elegance and developed into a spiritually rejuvenating rite that combines Zen Buddhism with social interaction. A host prepares tea for guests in a spirit of peacefulness and harmony. This program presents an historical overview of the 450-year-old ritual and demonstrates traditional tea-making with authentic Japanese utensils.Drew Sodo Hanson, Ph.D., has practiced Chado, the Japanese Way of Tea, for the past 30 years. He has demonstrated this traditional Japanese art form throughout the Delaware Valley and currently teaches it at Boukakuan Japanese Tea House and Garden in Columbus, NJ. In addition, he has taught Chado at the Japanese Cultural Center in Philadelphia and Penn State University.
