About this Event

Online Lecture & Hands-on Workshop with a Post Image Review

Are you fascinated by the energy of the city but unsure how to capture it? Do you want to move beyond taking snapshots and start telling stories through your lens?

Join Brian Leary of Light Source Journeys for this immersive three-part workshop designed to build your confidence and refine your eye for street photography. Brian’s teaching philosophy is built on stripping away technical intimidation to focus on what matters most: composition, storytelling, and finding your distinct artistic eye.

This hybrid course combines the convenience of online learning with hands-on practice in one of the Pacific Northwest’s most dynamic locations: the Downtown Seattle Waterfront. Whether you are looking to overcome the fear of photographing strangers or simply want to improve your composition in chaotic environments, Brian will provide the tools you need to document the world as you see it.

What You Will Learn

• The Art of Observation: How to anticipate moments before they happen.

• Conquering the Fear: Practical tips for photographing people candidly and ethically.

• Technical Mastery: Optimal camera settings for capturing the moment, simplified so they stick in practice.

• Composition on the Fly: Using light, shadow, and geometry to create compelling narratives.

Online Zoom Lecture | Tuesday, May 12 | 5:00pm - 6:00pm PT | The Essentials We begin with an online presentation covering the history, philosophy, and techniques of street photography. Brian will discuss gear choices and settings, but more importantly, he will share examples of successful street images to help you "see" the potential in everyday scenes before our hands-on workshop. The lecture will be recorded and sent the following morning, and will be available for 30 days.

Seattle Overlook Walk Park - Hands-On | Saturday, May 16 | 10:30am - 12:30pm PT

Meet as a group at the located in the We will meet in person to put theory into practice. You will have two hours to explore the waterfront with Brian, looking for characters, light, and unique moments. Brian will be available on-site for real-time guidance, helping you apply the techniques discussed in the online session.

Post Shoot Critique & Review (Zoom) The learning doesn't stop when the shutter clicks. In our final session, we will reconvene online. Everyone will share images from the shoot and Brian will provide a constructive critique, discussing what worked, what didn't, and how to improve your selection process.

Requirements & Gear

• Experience Level: A basic understanding of exposure (Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed) isrequired.

• Lenses: A zoom lens is acceptable, but a prime lens (28mm, 35mm, or 50mm) is ideal. Street photography benefits from a lightweight setup that forces you to "zoom with your feet."

About your instructor:

Brian Leary was initially exposed to photography while spending time with his father in a color darkroom, and began developing his own photographic interests when he moved to the Pacific Northwest as an adult. Brian has pursued his unique style and talent for photography over the past twenty-plus years in the industry. Today, he still uses the same methods with digital photography that he would have on film.
What sets Brian apart is not only his work as a photographer but his passion to share his knowledge of the art form with others. He has a unique talent for breaking down complex subjects and communicating techniques that not only make sense but stick in practice! Brian Leary founded in 2013 and now runs individualized tutoring workshop sessions that address each photographer’s specific needs and pain points. Brian focuses one-on-one attention so that his clients learn specific abilities to turn their photography aspirations into a reality. He is the kind of instructor you want to work with: a teacher who loves watching people light up when they get a great shot, especially when it’s a shot they didn’t think they could capture.
