Introduction to Lei Wili with Kahi Barrett Keyes
About this Event
Wili means “to wind, wrap, or twist” in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, the Hawaiian language.
In this welcoming, beginner-friendly workshop, cultural practitioner Kahi Barrett Keyes will introduce participants to the traditional wili method of lei making. You’ll learn how to thoughtfully select, arrange, wrap, and secure fresh materials while creating your own kūpeʻe to wear and take home.
Along the way, Kahi will share an introduction to the cultural significance of lei and help you build foundational skills that you can continue practicing at home.
No previous lei-making experience is necessary. All materials are included in the workshop fee.

Grant funding allows Waikīkī Community Center to offer this experience at a reduced community rate, making authentic Hawaiian cultural learning accessible to more students while ensuring that our cultural practitioners are compensated at the full value of their knowledge, preparation, materials, and instruction.
Who May Participate?
This workshop is open to participants ages 14 and older.
Participants under age 18 must attend with a registered adult.
What Is Included?
- Two hours of guided, hands-on instruction
- Fresh flowers, foliage, and lei-making supplies
- Your completed kūpeʻe to wear and take home
- An introduction to the cultural significance of lei
- Foundational skills you can continue practicing at home
