This workshop is an introduction to modern frame drum technique, open to participants of any level - including those that never picked up a musical instrument before.
We will explore the basics of modern lap-style frame drum (according to the approach of Zohar Fresco) and take time to play together. You will get to know different traditional rhythms from the East Mediterranean, learn how to create new grooves, and exercise rhythmicality in the movement. We will also pay attention to the body: its posture, responsiveness, relaxation, breath - as it plays a substantial role in any musical activity. I teach several groups of different levels in Berlin, as well as give individual lessons. In mid March 2025 I'm planning to start a new course from complete beginning - a journey to learn this instrument in-depth, in a very systematic approach that will develop your playing skills and expand your understanding of rhythm. → TEACHER
The workshop is led by Borys Slowikowski: percussionist, educator, performer, and psychologist. He studies frame drums from Zohar Fresco since 2010 and riqq from Yshai Afterman since 2020. Besides traditional and experimental music, he is involved in movement improvisation and performance field as well as in varied forms of somatic work, which inspire his teaching and artistic practice.
