Introduction to Collagraph Printing: A Hands-On Workshop
Join Ellie for a relaxed and welcoming introduction to collagraph printing, a wonderfully tactile and expressive printmaking technique. Leaving the session with your own finished collagraph print and a deeper understanding of this versatile and exciting process.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some experience of printmaking who would like to explore a different approach or gain insight into my way of creating collagraph prints.
Collagraph is a process where textures and materials are layered onto a plate, sealed, inked, and printed to create beautifully rich and characterful results. Throughout the session, I will guide you step-by-step through:
• Understanding what a collagraph plate is and how it works
• Creating your own plate using prepared imagery, templates, and materials
• Sealing and preparing the surface
• Inking the plate in a single colour
• Wiping and printing your artwork
The focus of the session will be on creating a one-colour collagraph print, similar in style to the example shown, allowing you to concentrate on texture, mark-making, and composition without feeling overwhelmed.
All materials will be provided, including imagery, templates, and objects you can use or draw inspiration from. You are also very welcome to bring along your own photographs, drawings, or small objects if you’d like to incorporate personal references into your design.
As a printmaker based in West Yorkshire, with a degree in Print and Surface Pattern Design and over six years of selling and exhibiting my work, I’m passionate about making printmaking accessible, calm, and enjoyable for all. I’ll be there throughout to demonstrate techniques, offer practical tips, and provide gentle one-to-one guidance as you develop your print. You will leave with a series of finished pieces that you can then take home to display, along with useful notes about how you may set up this practice at home.
All materials are included.
Skill level: Suitable for beginners.
Cost: £75 per person.
