This beginner-friendly class is designed for anyone curious about keeping bees—whether you’re preparing to start your first hive or simply want to better understand these remarkable creatures.

In this class, you will:

  • Learn the basics of beekeeping, equipment, hive setup, cost, and seasonal management
  • Explore the unique aspects of regional beekeeping in Eastern Tennessee, including climate, forage, and hive pests
  • Gain practical tips & tricks
  • Understand how to start your first hive the right way—from choosing bees to maintaining colony health
  • Taste local honey and learn how nectar sources and seasons influence flavor
  • Get insights from my own research on feral bees and natural resilience, and how those findings can help new beekeepers
  • Learn how to keep bees using the instructor’s method: Science & the Senses

About the instructor:

Taught by published honeybee researcher, second-generation Master Beekeeper Carmen Joyce with NoogaHoneyPot. Carmen manages 35-40 hives year round, collects swarms, conducts honeybee removals, and speaks at honeybee events.
